When the Gulf is warm enough to swim
Most people are comfortable from about 78°F up, which means May through October here. June through September the water sits in the low-to-high 80s and stops being refreshing at all — August is the peak, when it can hold 87–88°F for weeks. April is the gamble month: air in the 80s, water still in the low 70s, so the first step in is a surprise.
Winter water
January and February bottom out around 60°F. That's cold enough that swimming is a short, deliberate act rather than a beach day, but the sand is empty and the water is often at its clearest — winter has less algae and calmer stretches between fronts.
Why the reading can differ from the beach
This is a surface temperature for the water off Pensacola. Right at the shoreline, shallow water heats faster on a sunny afternoon and cools faster overnight, so knee-deep water can read a few degrees warmer than the number above. A strong, sustained south wind can also push warm surface water ashore, and a north wind can do the opposite and drag cooler water up.
