One tide a day, not two
Pensacola has a diurnal tide, which means most days bring a single high and a single low rather than the two-a-day cycle people expect from the Atlantic. If you're used to reading tide charts elsewhere, that's the thing that trips you up — there's no second high tide coming in six hours.
The range is small
Swing between high and low is usually a foot to a foot and a half. That's minor compared to most coastlines, so tides rarely make or break a beach day. They matter most if you're fishing the pass, launching a kayak off a shallow bayou ramp, or wading the flats — moving water is what turns the fish on, and the hour either side of a tide change is when it moves.
Wind beats the chart
Because the range is so small, a sustained wind can override the prediction. A hard south wind piles water into the bay and holds the level above the forecast; a strong north wind after a front can blow the bayous down until the chart looks wrong. Treat the times below as accurate and the heights as a good estimate.
