Navarre
Navarre sits in Santa Rosa County along Highway 98, east of Gulf Breeze and west of Fort Walton. It brands itself as Florida's Most Relaxing Place, which is marketing, but the underlying claim holds up: Navarre Beach is the least crowded developed beach on this stretch of coast.
Navarre Beach
Across the causeway on Santa Rosa Island, and noticeably calmer than Pensacola Beach — fewer bars, fewer crowds, more families who have been coming to the same rental for years. The Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary put an artificial reef close enough to shore that you can snorkel it from the beach, which is unusual on the Gulf Coast and the main reason to make the drive with a mask.
The drive that makes it worth it
The road west from Navarre Beach to Pensacola Beach runs through Gulf Islands National Seashore with nothing built on either side — dunes, sea oats, water on both hands, and no development for miles. It's the best coastal drive in the region and most visitors never find it. It does close after major storms and stays closed while sand is cleared, so check before you commit to it as your route.
Living out here
Santa Rosa County schools draw a lot of families over the county line, and the trade is the commute — figure forty minutes or so into Pensacola, more when 98 is busy. It's a reasonable trade if your work is flexible or east of town, and a grind if it isn't.
