Milton
Milton is the Blackwater River town northeast of Pensacola — the Santa Rosa County seat, with a historic downtown along Willing Street and the best paddling in the region running right through it.
The river
The Blackwater is a genuinely clear, sand-bottomed river with white sandbars, and outfitters in and around Milton will put you on it for anything from a couple of hours to an overnight. It's the main reason people from Pensacola drive out here, and it's busiest on summer weekends.
Downtown
Small, walkable, and built around antique shops and local restaurants rather than chains. It makes a decent half-day when you want somewhere that isn't the beach.
