Cantonment
Cantonment is north Escambia County along Highway 29, roughly fifteen miles up from Pensacola. It's a working community rather than a destination — the paper mill has anchored the local economy for generations — and it's where a lot of people go when they want land without leaving reach of the city.
Why people move here
Space and price. Lots run larger than anything comparable closer in, the tax picture is county rather than city, and you can still be at a job in Pensacola in about half an hour. For anyone who wants a shop, a boat, or room between them and the neighbors, the math works out here in a way it doesn't south of I-10.
What to expect day to day
Rural in feel, suburban in services. Highway 29 carries the shopping and the chain restaurants; get off it and you're quickly into pine and pasture. Tate High School anchors the community the way high schools do in small Southern towns, and Friday nights follow accordingly.
Things worth asking about
Well water and septic are common once you're off the main corridors, and both are worth confirming rather than assuming — a septic inspection is not part of a standard home inspection and has to be ordered separately. Ask about the mill too. Depending on wind direction and how close you are, some days carry the smell, and how much that bothers you is genuinely personal.
